For those of you in the air conditioning industry this may seem like a obvious question but to those people who are outside of the industry the term Freon and Refrigerant are seen as one in the same. The term Freon is a trademarked name by the DuPont company, or now known as The Chemours Company. Freon only actually applies to a certain select few refrigerants such as R-12, R-22, and R-502. The rest of the refrigerants on the market today are just that, refrigerants. The term Freon has nothing to do with the current HFC refrigerants such as R-134a, R-410A, and R-404A.
The only reason the Freon term stuck was that when the brand name was created back in 1930 it was the first mainstream refrigerant on the market. It got to the point that when you were talking about refrigerant the only main option was Freon. As the years passed more alternative options became available on the market but the generic ‘Freon’ name stuck in people’s heads. It’s very similar to how the trademarked term ‘Coke,’ can be applied to a large variety of sodas.
So, if you’re looking for R-134a Freon… you’re actually looking for R-134a refrigerant.
